Go Crazy with Chalkboard

I love the idea of a blackboard in the kitchen where you can leave messages, write cute sayings or make a space where children can be creative. It doesn’t have to be in your kitchen. You can place one in the bedroom, lounge or even laundry!

Below are some chalkboard ideas you can easily implement in your house.  You can create a chalkboard wall or a bedhead or even frame it as a work of art. It gives the room a feeling of home and comfort, especially if you print your favourite sayings on it.

Chalkboard paint comes in so many different colour and is so easy to use. It is thicker than normal paint and dries quickly to a nice finish. If you are using a bright colour you will need to ensure you get a nice straight edge. The trick I used with painters’ tape for Katie’s Kitchen is mapped below. Be sure to follow it and believe me it works!

Here are some great chalkboards ideas for your home.

Here is the wall I painted for my friend Katie.  It was not hard getting the straight-edge chalkboard. See instructions below.

PAINT THAT CHALKBOARD

How to get a nice straight edge when painting the main wall white (or whatever light colour you choose) and the other one (or part of the wall) in darker chalk paint.

  1. Buy some good quality wide painters’ tape (ScotchBlue, 36mm, is the one I prefer)  and chalkboard paint colour – black is my preference but they come in an assortment of bright colours.
  2. First, paint your main wall in your light/white colour (2 or 3 coats, however many are needed) and wait for the paint to dry. Do not worry if the white goes over onto the intended blackboard wall. Wait for the paint to dry thoroughly.
  3. Place the painters tape along the corner where the two colours will meet (if it is not a wall edge, you will need to measure and draw a line using a pencil.) Make sure the wide part of the tape is on the newly painted wall with the edge of the tape along the line where the two paints will meet.
  4. Next – this is very important.  Paint over the tape edge with the white paint (again it won’t matter if you paint goes over onto the chalkboard wall).  This will seal the edge of the tape so that the chalk paint does not bleed onto the white.  Wait for this paint to dry properly.
  5. Now paint your chalkboard wall with black or whatever colour paint you have chosen. You can go right up to the edge and over the tape (but not past it) with your black paint, using however many coats you need.
  6. Most painters tape says to peel off within 14 days, so wait until the paint is well and truly dry.  Also, if you seal the tape with too thick a coat, some of that paint could come up when you peel the tape off, so don’t glob it on.
