PART 2 – furnish and decorate with bedside tables, rugs and lights
So to recap – you need to think about your bedroom colours for spring. I find it easiest to choose a quilt cover first, then match the linen and build the room features around this. Of course you need to keep in mind your curtains – if they are neutral, then it is easy but if they are a dominant colour, you will need to find matching quilt cover colours that complement rather than compete or clash! Here are a few 2019 linen/curtain colours and how they complement each other.

Your bedside tables – functional and smart. If your bedside tables are looking a bit glum or dull, consider painting them to match your new spring look. Much cheaper than buying new ones and so easy if you use the great range of chalk paints from Bunnings – one coat, no need to prime or even sand (do sand if heavy with varnish). However if your tables are too small, then consider selling them on gumtree and getting larger ones. I believe you need to have everything handy by your bedside and by the time, you’ve added a pot-plant or vase, a light, a candle and books do you have still have room for a cup of coffee? If not then ‘ditch and switch’ for a larger bedside table or ones with more drawers. A very good investment.

Bedside tables can be as cheap as $40 new.
or upcycle by painting with Chalk Paint. In a future blog, I will describe how to make your own chalk paint (using water based cheap white paint as base) as it is quite expensive.

I love the idea of using chairs, quirky or vintage in lieu of bedside tables. Click the image below for lots more examples of using chairs from BK Collected Design.
Add a rug for that luxury feel. This is optional but you will notice how nice it is to get out of bed and feel a soft texture beneath your feet. Even if you have carpet, adding a small rug will give warmth and style to your space. it doesn’t have to be very large, any shape is good but shag style is most fun and they are currently very cheap to purchase. I bought a grey one for $40. Make sure it is not too thin.

Light up your bedroom with bedside lights. Designers often go on about decorating with lights but really your bedside lights need to be functional as well. I mean what’s the point of having a trendy looking light but you can’t see to read in bed? Choose lamps you can read by and then buy two so at least they match. Use vases and flowers or pot-plants to jazz up the room, don’t worry about the lamps too much, just make sure they look nice and are useful! Check out the very good and cheap range at Lighting Style.
Then check out your total picture. Is there any bedroom items which takes the focus away from the finished effect? Such as a strong coloured chair, box or messy table? Ditch and Switch! Your finished look should be pleasing, calming, fresh and a place where you will want to spend a third of your life! Here are some examples – Click each picture to enlarge.
