Never undervalue the use of mirrors in your home.  Not only for bathrooms and hallways; they bring light, style and functionality to any room.  They are not expensive as a décor feature, and come in so many variations. They can be very elegant and stylish, or quirky and modern, small or large, ornate or plain.  The main thing they do is open up your space, make is seems larger and look  lighter.

They can also be a inexpensive ‘wow’ factor, something that draws the eye and creates a feature.  You can use a mirror as a piece of artwork or place it in a position so that it reflects a painting, a photo, a view, a plant or other special feature.  Compared with their value and worth to add style, light etc to your home, they are relatively inexpensive.  You can even make your own.  See some examples below- at the end I have added some DIY videos to inspire you with your own creativity.

Mirrors as a feature : Find a fun mirror – here is the decorative sunflower mirror from Target for around $30.

Mirrors for creating space – hang a large window where it will reflect a window and this will give the illusion of another window in the room and make the space look larger and brighter.  Prop a long mirror up against the wall – this is an old interior decorator’s trick to make the room look bigger.  There are have a good variety of ‘leaner’ mirrors, some ornate, some plain.  Below are two Vicky Mirrors from Temple and Webster.

Trending Mirrors : my favourite on-trend mirrors are the casement mirrors (American term).  Casement windows are now highly fashionable, and since we can’t just change our windows, we can add a bit of the style by hanging or leaning casement-style mirrors, or arched mirrors as they are called in Australian.  They can be arched or square, made from iron or wood. They will add depth and texture to any wall.

Mirrors as Artwork : great for a plain room which needs a lift.  They can be expensive to purchase but in the long run, they will add so much value to the style of your space, they’ll be worth the investment.  Arty round mirrors below are from Shine Mirrors and bold teak wooden mirror is from April and Oak.

You can make a feature of mirrors of various shapes as long as you keep them generally the same size.

You can even design your own artwork and transfer to plain mirrors or purchased original art/mirror work as seen below available from Etsy!  if you want to purchase an original artistic mirror consider Etsy as there are plenty of one-offs to be purchased.

Some ideas for using Mirrors – in the hallway, a wooden edged mirror reflect the warm wood of the table and artifacts and brings a welcoming tone to your entrance.  A small living area can benefit from a simple large mirror above the sofa so make a small room seem larger.  An ornate gold mirror above the fireplace brings a touch of elegance and blends well with the other neutral soft furnishings.
