The Spring Bedroom : ideas and inspiration

Are you painting, changing curtains and carpets or just doing a quick refresh of your bedroom for Summer? You can check bedroom colour trends, curtains and carpets in a future blog but if you are not wanting to do a major renovate of your bedroom, consider looking at how you can brighten and update your bedroom without spending a fortune.  Here are some key items you must check off when redesigning your bedroom.

PART 1 – YOUR BED

Think about this room – we spend 8 hours or more out of every 24 hours in this room, mostly in bed!  Your room should be cosy, fun, attractive and above all the bed should be comfortable.  If you can’t afford to get the mattress of your dreams, consider at least a memory foam topper.  It will do wonders to transform a not-so-comfortable mattress for under $200.

You will also need decent sheets.  You want to invest in sheets that will feel cool in the hot summer months to come.  I am not a fan of white sheets but prefer pastel colours for spring/summer and always get at least 250 percale. Then you can match the sheet colour with your quilt.  But first you should decide what type and thread count you want.   K-mart has a very honest and up to date sheet buying guide.

My favourite sheets at the moment are the Coolmax sheets in light green.  All the following sheet sets can be bought for under $100.

Also Target has a respectable 250 percale sheet sets in soft pink, baby blue and silver grey.  These  have done well even with lots of washing but there is not a big choice of colours.  I noticed K-mart has some vintage look sheets but I’m not sure what the quality is like.  They are 225 Percale.

Choose your new quilt cover carefully as you need it to match your curtains, walls and carpet if you are not redecorating the room.  The pastel greys, pinks and mint greens are a hit this spring, and anything in cream/white will look cool and fresh.  The following quilts can be viewed here at Adairs website.

Layering with throws and bright cushions comes next.  First choose your quilt cover, then take it or a photo to the shops and find complimentary cushions.  If you are unsure about how to style your bed, check out this great video from Inside Out Magazine with designer Lisa Koehler

If you don’t have a comfortable bedhead, consider buying some European pillows in a matching pillow cases to place at the back…..they will give the bed style some height as well as provide a comfortable bedrest when sitting up in bed.

Mix and match using large and small pillows and textured cushions.

In Part 2,  I will discuss bedside tables, rugs and items to make your bedroom cosy.  For now I will leave you with more ideas to inspire you to start working on making over your bedroom as a spring challenge!
